The Discovery Channel recently aired a documentary by Ted Koppel titled “Living With Cancer”. This courageous show is centered around a panel that experienced a cancer diagnosis. If you haven’t been able to watch this documentary, I’d highly recommend it. For nothing else, it reminds those of us who are fortunate enough to have our health to stop for a moment to truly appreciate what a gift it truly is. And for those touched by cancer in one way or another, I’d imagine that it would connect strongly with the experiences that have been felt by friends and family, if not themselves.
In conjunction with the series, effectiveUI built the Cancer Collage, an interactive social application for sharing personal stories, images, audio clips, and videos. People from all over the country have the ability to share their own personal experiences with cancer. The collage has given people the chance to express themselves in any way they choose, and their collective contributions have been nothing short of remarkable. They are inspirational and heartbreaking, reflective and thought-provoking, and very genuine and human.
I have been involved with numerous software projects over my career, and I’ve been able to enjoy a lot of success with those implementations over several technologies and clients. There’s always a personal reward in doing your job well, but this project went well beyond that. The project was challenging technically and the team was able to deliver a great result to be proud of. But it was very rewarding on a human level and on an emotional level. This project has clearly touched a lot of people in a profound way, and I speak for the entire effectiveUI team in saying that being a part of it has been an honor.
The application is available at http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/koppel/cancer/cancer.html.
